A Process of Growth

"Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness” 2 Peter 2:5-6.

In previous devotionals, we’ve been looking at the first chapter of 2 Peter and some important fundamentals for the life of a follower of Christ. God through Christ has supplied divine power for everything needed for life and godliness (verse 3), and so our priority is to diligently take the supplied Spirit resources and add them to our lifestyle. Beginning with faith in the truth we add moral character, experiential knowledge, self-control, perseverance, and godliness.

Godliness is described and defined as a practical awareness of God in every aspect of life. Exactly how this works out in life varies for each individual. Personally, I believe it works best with a morning quiet time. A quiet time alone with our Father, in Bible reading and study, along with prayer, sets the course for the day. Whether this time is fifteen minutes, a half hour, or an hour, it is an important time of being aware of our Father’s presence and promptings. In quietness, we may be aware of thoughts as to someone to contact or pray for, or some task that we should tend to.

Godliness can be described as practicing the presence of God. As He says, “Cease striving (be still) and know that I am God” Psalm 46:10. Elijah the prophet firsthand discovered that God is not to be found in the strong wind, the earthquake, or the fire (1 Kings 19), but in a still small voice. Similarly, He will not shout above the noise of our world, but can only be heard when we quiet ourselves in His presence.

Godliness is literally God-likeness; a desire to become more like Him. If our heart’s desire is to be like Him, then He is pleased and honored, no matter how imperfectly we do so. Like all qualities outlined in 2 Peter 1, it is is a process of growth, not instant achievement. It is not done by self-determination, but by Spirit-enabling. It is not so much in trying harder, but in yielding more. May we progress today in so yielding.
